My Editing Services

Different types of editing are useful at different stages in your manuscript. Here are the types that I offer.

Copyediting

Copyediting involves checking for consistency and clarity in punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and grammar. It also involves a check of syntax and sentence structure to ensure clarity of meaning and flow. A heavier copyedit can also help with revisions to wordy or clunky text that could use some extra care. Copyediting takes place after developmental (or substantive) editing and line editing and before a manuscript is ready for publication.

As part of my copyediting package, I provide a style sheet that shows the style and spelling choices I followed during the copyedit. This is a great resource for keeping style choices consistent if you’re writing a series.

For manuscript copyedits, I generally follow the Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary for my editing style choices, which are standard in US publishing. But I am happy to adjust style choices to your preferences.

I do not use AI (LLMs) in my copyediting process.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final read-through done on a book before publishing. Proofreading is generally done after the manuscript is formatted for print or e-book to ensure no errors were introduced or missed in the previous stages. A proofreader checks for any blatant mechanical issues, such as punctuation, spelling, and capitalization. If done on the formatted book, proofreading also includes checking for proper formatting, including typeface issues, misaligned margins, widows and orphans, etc.

I am able to proofread in either a Word document or on a PDF for books formatted for print.

I do not use AI (LLMs) in my proofreading process.

Pricing and samples:

  • Everyone’s manuscript is different, and some need more TLC than others. I calculate my rates for each manuscript based on the length (word count) and the type of editing that is requested. I’ll send you an estimate of the cost and time needed for your edit before I begin editing.

  • My rates currently start at $0.01 per word for copyediting and $0.006 per word for proofreading. The cost of a deeper, more involved, or complicated edit may be higher. I'm also happy to try and work with your budget around these prices.

  • I am happy to do a FREE sample edit of a small section (generally 500-1000 words) of your manuscript so you will know if my editing is right for you. This will also let me assess how heavy of a copyedit you may need and how long it’ll take to complete.

  • If you'd like more details about what an edit of your manuscript may cost or want a free sample, please feel free to contact me!
